- PROJECT OWNER: CITY OF PIERRE
The project consists of
the reconstruction and concrete asphalt resurfacing of the main runway and
immediate taxiways. The scope of
the project involves the placement of 34, 700 tons of P-401 concrete asphalt and
over 138, 00 tons of crushed aggregate basecourse.
Morris, Inc., subcontracted with AS&A to perform the contractor
quality control (materials testing) for this project.
The quality control program included compaction testing of the basecourse
cushion, cold feed and hot mix asphalt testing and the field extraction of
asphaltic pavement cores. Morris
Inc., also requested AS&A to perform a P-401 asphalt mix design for this
project.
AS&A owns and
operates a fleet of mobile asphalt testing labs that conducts QC asphalt testing
on the behalf of contractors for airport and SDDOT projects throughout the
State. Mobile labs are equipped
with state of the art electronic instrumentation that delivers precision results
of both cold feed and hot mix samples. All
of the testing equipment is calibrated at intervals and to tolerances as
specified by AASHTO’s Accreditation Program for State and Federal projects. Managers operating the mobile labs have passed rigorous
training programs sponsored in cooperation with the Asphalt Institute and the
SDDOT that prepares them to perform the tests proficiently and to assure the
reliability of the results. The
mobile labs perform the following cold and asphaltic hot mix tests: gradations,
Atterberg Limits (LL and PL), lightweight pieces, fractured faces, Rice
Theoretical Density, Marshall Density and density determination of cores
extracted from the asphaltic pavement. Also,
AS&A offers gyratory compactions results for superpave projects.
AS&A Laboratory
Services are certified by the Asphalt Institute to perform mix designs and the
lab is regularly inspected and certified by the AASHTO Accreditation Program.
